As Christians we know that God is sovereign. We see in scripture how He sets the stage for a divine purpose even years prior to when He will sovereignly move to accomplish that plan. We also know God has a way of getting our attention when He is ready to move. The founding of the Business Men's Fellowship is one of those experiences.
The vision for BMF began with a small group of men who had a call to share Jesus Christ with their peers in the marketplace. These men met, prayed, and sent a letter of encouragement to various Christian leaders. The underlying message in the letter was: Has God released you from His burden to reach the lost in the marketplace? Those words motivated men from across America and several nations to travel to Kansas City, MO in the early fall of 1995. While each man came with his own perception of what would take place, the group was about to hear that the Holy Spirit brought them together for His purpose and intentions.
Business Men's Fellowship was to be a new ministry, established by the Holy Spirit, with a clear focus on what He intended them to accomplish.
A special plan and purpose
There are times as Christians that we know beyond a shadow of doubt that we are in the right place, at the right time, and are about to hear from God. During a time of prayer and reflection, words were spoken that set the agenda for God's purpose for the Kansas City gathering. When the group heard, "It is by no purpose of your own that you have gathered here this day," and "you are together for My purposes and My intentions," they knew this was a God-ordained occasion. The destined purpose of God for this group of men was to establish a new organization. Each man was involved in the business world, a business owner or employee and knowing that Jesus too had spent many years in business as a carpenter, they called this new organization,Business Men's Fellowship.
"His new harvest machine"
There was no doubt as to what God intended for Business Men's Fellowship -- we were to build an organization of Christian men that would bring the claims of Christ and His salvation to the marketplace. BMF would be a servant ministry, helping its members to reach the lost in their personal and business spheres of life. To do that, BMF created various platforms of ministry that could reach men right where they were, in the midst of their workday, at times convenient for them. Our one-hour, mid-week breakfast or luncheon is just one of those platforms. BMF members are challenged both to invite Christian men to join us and also provide a setting where they can invite their colleagues to a meal to hear the story of how a man's life was changed through relationship with Jesus Christ. BMF also helps men become more effective witnesses for Christ. BMF, as an organization, has accepted the responsibility of creating and producing print "tools" for evangelism to further equip our members and enable them to fulfill the instruction Jesus gave us to "go into all the world and make disciples of all men."
